A deep dive into diagnosing acral and nodular melanoma | Accredited | 3.5 hrs 1
Acral and nodular melanoma are less common but clinically significant melanoma subtypes that are associated with delayed diagnosis and poorer outcomes due to their atypical presentation, rapid growth and potential to mimic benign lesions.
As frontline clinicians in skin cancer detection, Primary Care Physicians play a critical role in recognising subtle early features, initiating timely biopsy or referral, and providing patient education and follow-up.
In these recordings from our 2026 GP Education Breakfast, our presenters will take a deep dive into diagnosing acral and nodular melanoma, followed by an interactive case study discussion with a reflection exercise.
Video 1 (Accredited for 2hr EA):- Dermoscopy of acral melanoma (Dr Lachlan Byth)
- Dermoscopy of nodular melanoma (Prof Pascale Guitera)
- Q&A (Led by A/Prof Paul Fishburn and featuring Dr Byth and Prof Guitera)
Video 2 (Accredited for 1.5hr RP)- Interactive case study discussion and reflection (Led by A/Prof Fishburn and Dr Christene Mikhail). Note: For RP accreditation purposes, the Case Study Reflection Exercise must be completed.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Recognise key clinical and dermoscopic features of acral and nodular melanoma and differentiate them from benign and non-melanocytic lesions.
- Apply a systematic approach to dermoscopic assessment to improve diagnostic accuracy in detecting challenging melanoma subtypes.
- Identify appropriate biopsy techniques and referral pathways for suspicious lesions, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.
- Interpret and discuss real-life case studies to reinforce diagnostic reasoning and management decision-making for acral and nodular lesions.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARTICIPANTS
- After watching Video 1, tap the CASE STUDY REFLECTION button to complete the online form while you are watching Video 2. After you submit, a copy of your reflection will be emailed to you.
- Once completed both videos and the reflection document, tap FINISH and MODULE CPD EVALUATION at the bottom. A Statement of Completion for 3.5 hours will then be provided.
- Note to GPs: If your member number for one of the CPD Homes listed below is on your PROFILE AND MODULE RECORD, we will upload your CPD hours on your behalf.
