In these practical and engaging recorded presentations from the Northern Rivers Melanoma Specialists’ Update, Skin Cancer GP A/Prof Paul Fishburn and Pathologist Dr Alexandra Currie explore how dermoscopy and dermatopathology work together to improve skin cancer diagnosis.

Video 1: Dermoscopy: An Overview
A/Prof Fishburn covers core principles of dermoscopy, including pattern recognition, the “Chaos and Clues” approach and key features of both pigmented and non-pigmented lesions. Special attention is given to challenging clinical scenarios and high-risk anatomical sites.
Video 2: Decoding the melanoma report
Dr Currie then explains how dermoscopic findings correlate with histopathology and highlights what clinicians should include on pathology requests to support accurate diagnosis.
Video 3: Dermatopathology dermoscopy correlation
The presentations conclude with a joint case study discussion from A/Prof Fishburn and Dr Currie demonstrating dermoscopic histopathological correlation and practical insights.
This recording is suitable for Skin Cancer GPs, General GPs, Surgeons, Nurses and other healthcare professionals.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this presentation, you will be able to:- Identify dermoscopic features of melanoma and other skin malignancies to enhance early detection and diagnostic accuracy.
- Interpret melanoma pathology reports by identifying key histological features, staging terminology and prognostic indicators to guide appropriate clinical management and patient communication in general practice.
- Correlate dermoscopic patterns with histopathological features through case-based discussions to refine diagnostic skills.
